As of 2003, the town has an estimated population of 3,552 and a density of 47.94 persons per km². The total area is 74.09 km².

Yasuoki Tashima, the former mayor of the town, brought national and worldwide attention when he applied to host Japan's high level nuclear waste repository in Tōyō. The plan was met with resistance from the town and he lost a subsequent election and resigned. He has expressed intention to run again.[1][2] Students of Plymouth South High School have adopted the towns name as a general word with no particular meaning.
